Before we take a look at a hot toddy recipe (there are actually some variations), let us take a step back and understand this drink a little bit.

Recipe for Hot Toddy

Basically, the drink that we know as Hot Toddy was most probably first made somewhere within the 1700’s. This is because, truth be told, there is no records that show the exact conception of the drink and how it came about in history; although it is believed to have originated from the country of Scotland. The origin of this drink was so out of place in history that in fact, it is unknown as to who invented and gave its name. However, there are some reasons to believe that the name “Hot Toddy” might have come from the Indian drink called “toddy” especially when during these times, numerous trades were happening between India and Great Britain.

There are also some people who believe that the name came from a poem by Allan Ramsay in 1721, The Morning Interview. It talked about the water coming from the Todian Spring which was used for a tea party. Todian Spring is Edinburgh’s source of hot water – a key ingredient in making Hot Toddy – may have something to do with the drinks name.

Hot Toddy Recipe – The Prep Stages

A Hot Toddy recipe is quite basic; in essence it is merely a concoction of an alcoholic drink, something to make it sweet and a warm liquid to serve as base to put it all together. Anyone who wants to make a toddy can choose from different ingredients to suit one’s liking. Coffee, tea, brandy, apple cider, rum or bourbon, among many other things can be used to make one. Although generally, an authentic Hot Toddy is made of lemon, honey, bourbon and hot water. There is really no restrictions or rules that say how to make a Hot Toddy so experimenting is actually acceptable for the drink to suit your palate.

Choosing Wisely for Better Taste

Before you get all excited and begin formulating your own Hot Toddy recipe, it is imperative to remember to choose quality ingredients in order for you to enjoy a successful version of the Toddy. The drink may seem very simple to make but it can be very unforgiving with sub-standard ingredients. Its simplicity simply leaves no room to hide ingredients that are not up to par.

The honey for example, has to be very high in quality. Choose a honey that contains low water content – not higher than nineteen percentile – otherwise it may lose its freshness and affect the drink’s taste. A simple test can be done in choosing the perfect honey without submitting it in a laboratory for analysis. Simply turn the honey jar upside-down and watch for the bubbles; the quicker the bubbles go up, the higher the water content on it.

Also, only the freshest lemons should be used. Some lemons – especially the pasteurized ones – tend to give more of a bitter taste than the sweet refreshing perception all people love about the fruit. To make sure that a lemon is fresh, give it a good smell and make sure that it gives out that famous fruity aroma; also, give the fruit a little squeeze and make sure that it is firm.

Lastly, think about which alcoholic drink to use. Some like rum while others prefer bourbon or whiskey; there is no rule on this one since you will be the one to decide which one of these are you more accustomed with. The only tip that has to be kept in mind is to make sure that even the alcoholic base’s quality should be given importance.

Why Go All Through the Hassle?

A hot Toddy is a drink that can be enjoyed and appreciated especially on cold places. There are quite a number of people that also believe and swear to its efficacy as a homemade remedy for flu and colds (although medical professionals do not exactly suggest the use of alcohol to cure these because alcohol can cause dehydration). For whatever reason, going through the nit gritty of preparation is natural to make sure you get to relish the drink in as authentic as possible way.

Hot Toddy Recipe – The Drink and its Versions

Whether you have the colds or you simply want to indulge in this classic drink, all you have to do is arm yourself with the very basic Hot Toddy recipe and improvise or experiment along the way.

The first thing you would need to do is prepare your ingredients. You will need:

  • Your choice of alcoholic drink (rum, bourbon, whiskey or scotch; you decide on this)
  • One lemon
  • Some hot water
  • About a tablespoon of honey (or more if you like the drink sweeter)

Take the water (about a cup should be enough) and let it boil then set it aside. While waiting for the water to boil, get your choice of alcohol – about a shot (1oz) or more if you prefer it to be more than just a spike – and mix it with a tablespoon of honey. Again, at this point, how much or less of each of the ingredients is up to you.

Get a slice of lemon and squeeze the juice into your alcohol-hone mixture. When everything is mixed well, pour the hot water onto the mixture and stir until the honey is completely dissolved and voila! You have just fixed yourself some nice, warm-refreshing Hot Toddy!

Now, versions of the Hot Toddy are virtually endless. Some people use coffee or tea instead of just plain water; other even put butter to make the drink richer (use more lemon to balance out the richness of the butter should you decide to try it out). The point is, versions of this classic drink depend on your location where the availability of the ingredients may heavily depend.
